Health Careers

Students in this program learn nurse's aide skills, which include taking and recording vital signs and assisting with special health care procedures. At the end of the first year, students are encouraged to take the state Certified Nursing Assistant exam. The second year of the Health Careers program provides training necessary for a medication aide and expands upon first-year training to provide more advanced skills.

Additionally, Health Careers II students may choose clinical options in three areas of their choice or elect work-based learning if employed in a job related to Health Careers. Concurrent college enrollment at Blue Ridge Community College is also an option for those students who have made a decision concerning the Health Careers college curriculum they wish to pursue. Following successful completion of the first year, students who are high school seniors may also elect to be considered as applicants for the Practical Nursing Program.

Students have the opportunity to qualify for a certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant and are eligible for CPR Healthcare provider cards. Additional certificates may be earned for Medication and First Aid.

Home Health Aide, Hospital Ward Secretary and Nursing Assistant are three of the top 10 fastest-growing careers in healthcare. Health Careers provides an excellent background for pursuing additional education in many other health-related occupations.

If a student elects to complete the first year of the course prior to transferring to the first year of the 18-month LPN program, the student will receive credit for completing a two-year vocational sequence.

Upon completion of the State Boards, students are given credit for a SOL elective.
