Medication Aide

As of January 1, 2009, all individuals interested in becoming a Medication Aide in an Assisted Living Facility will be required to take this 68 hour course. Successful completion of this course will qualify the student to take the State Board exam for Registered Medication Aides in the state of VA.

Medication administration and management of diabetes are two of the greatest areas of responsibilities faving professionals in senior care today. The Medication Aide class offered at Massanutten Technical Center will provide instruction and training on the procedures for preparation and administration of medication including specific training on diabetic medication administration.

This class is suited for those that have already completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program or have taken the Direct Care Staff Training program offered by the Department of Social Services. A PPD skin test is also required before beginning class.

  • Legal and Ethical Issues
  • Preparing for Save Administration of Medication
  • Introduction to Pharmacology
  • Administraton of Prepared Instillations and Treatments (oral medications, eye, ear, nose etc.)
  • Documentation
  • Storage and Disposal of Medications
  • Special Issues in Medication Administration
  • Insulin Administration
